William (known as Jim) was born William James Grant Wyllie on 17 August 1899 at West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand, the 1st of 3 children of David and Margaret(Grant) Wyllie . He was educated at Outram Primary School and then attended Otago Boys High School for 2 years before joining the local branch of the National Bank. To further his education he cycled to Mosgiel on three evenings a week to catch the train to Dunedin so that he could attend classes at the Dunedin Technical College. Some years later he gained his diploma in banking through a correspondence course. In 1919 he was transferred to the Hawera branch of the bank and spent the rest of his banking career in North Island cities except for a period of six years in the London Head Office. At 32, in 1931, he married Muriel Gladys Grimshaw in New Zealand and they had four children, Margaret Anne, Helen Muriel, David James and Elizabeth Kathyrn. At 43, in 1942, he was the Bank Manager at the National Bank, Victoria Street, Dargaville, Kaipara, Northland. At 58, in 1957, he was a Manager living with Muriel at 62 Upland Road, Remuera, Auckland, New Zealand. At 73 years of age, on the 2nd of December 1972, he died and was buried in the West Taieri cemetery, Otago, New Zealand.
A noteworthy record has just been established in Outram School. The members of the family of Mr and Mrs David Wyllie, three in number, have each in their turn been dux of the school, and so have gained the Snow memorial gold modal, Graham D. Wyllie being the winner this year.
