The Family of William and Ellen
Charles(3) Grant.
On leaving school Charles worked on the home farm at “Clairinch” and gained further experience in farming in the Tapanui district and at Earnscleugh. After his marriage to Miss Catherine McDiarmid, a daughter of pioneer settlers at Woodside, he and his bride were the first to reside in the new home built on “Gladfield”. When the first manager of the factory built by the Taieri and Peninsular Dairy Company on part of "Gladfield” relinguished his position, Charles was appointed manager. Later he was manager of the Outram Creamery. In 1907, he and his brother Robert bought a farm at Benmore in Southland. He farmed also at Winton then at Drummond.
As he was an experienced and successful breeder of the milking Shorthorn his services were in demand to act as judge of this breed at A&P Shows throughout the country. He was made a life member of the NZ Milking Shorthorn Association. From early manhood he took a keen interest in the work of the Presbyterian Church. When his sister was organist at West Taieri, Charles was the choirmaster, the services of a precantor being no longer required. This interest in music he maintained throughout his long life. He died in 1960 at the ripe age of 93.
